How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last? A UK Dentist’s Answer

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last

Whitening is not cheap, and it is not permanent. Whether you are still deciding or you have just walked out of the appointment, you want the same answer. How long teeth whitening lasts, and what shortens it.

Nobody can give you a date. What a dentist can give you is a realistic window, the point at which the fade starts, and which habits move it. Some of what you will have read does not survive contact with the research.

This guide covers how long a result holds and how the routes differ. It also covers what brings the colour back, and how long the appointment itself takes.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Around three years, if the treatment was carried out or prescribed by a dentist and you follow the aftercare advice. That is the NHS’s own figure, and it comes with the caveat that whitening is never permanent.

Three years is the outer edge of a normal result, not a guarantee, and the fade starts long before that. That is really two questions. How long before you notice any change, and how long before you would want it done again? Months for the first, years for the second.

Route How long the result tends to hold What decides it
Whitening carried out at a dental practice Around three years with good aftercare Professional strength, applied under supervision
Trays and gel prescribed by a dentist for home use The same order of duration Worn for two to six weeks; easy to top up later
Kits, strips and whitening toothpastes bought over the counter Not measured; the research compares size of change, not duration Not an equivalent substitute for supervised whitening

The rest of this guide is about that middle column: what holds a result, and what shortens it.

Expert Tip: photograph your teeth in daylight before you start. Shade memory is unreliable, and a photo is the fairest way to judge the result later.

How Long Does Professional Teeth Whitening Last?

The evidence here is better than most people expect, because somebody measured how long teeth whitening lasts rather than estimating it.

A randomised trial published in the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry in 2026 followed forty patients through three in-practice whitening sessions a week apart. Tooth colour was measured with a spectrophotometer at one week, six months and one year. A year on, the whitening effect was still clinically relevant. From the six-month reading, though, the colour had already begun to come back, and that regression continued through to the one-year measurement.

So a professionally whitened result does not fall off a cliff. It drifts, slowly, from about the six-month mark.

A prescribed home kit works differently rather than worse. You wear custom trays for two to six weeks, so the result builds gradually, and you keep the trays afterwards. That last point matters more than it sounds: a top-up means fresh gel from your dentist, not the whole treatment again. Not every practice offers both routes, and in several systems the in-practice element is a final session rather than the whole treatment. If you want to see how our whitening treatments are structured, both are set out there.

How Long Does Teeth Bleach Last: Bleaching Is Whitening

Bleaching and whitening are the same treatment. Clinicians and research papers tend to say bleaching; patients and product packaging tend to say whitening. Nothing about the chemistry, the timescale or the result changes with the word. How long does tooth bleaching last, then? Around three years with dentist-supervised treatment and good aftercare, drifting from about six months, exactly as whitening does.

Different systems sit inside that same answer. Enlighten whitening, for instance, combines a two-week home treatment with a final in-practice session. It guarantees a VITA B1 shade at the end. That is a firmer promise about where you finish than about how long you stay there.

What Makes Whitening Fade, & What Slows It Down

Teeth do not un-whiten on a timer. What decides how long teeth whitening lasts is mostly surface staining building back up, rather than the deeper shade returning.

  • Coffee, tea and red wine. The NHS names these three drinks specifically. Rinsing with water after one, rather than giving them up, is the realistic version of this advice.
  • Smoking. Listed by the NHS alongside them, and the one habit with no workaround.
  • Getting older. The NHS lists age as a cause in its own right, and no whitening course pauses it.
  • Surface build-up. Plaque and tartar hold stain against the tooth. A regular hygienist appointment removes the film that colour clings to, and it is the maintenance step most patients skip.
  • Whitening toothpaste, within limits. A 2026 evidence review in the journal Brazilian Oral Research found that these products work mainly through abrasives. They lift surface stain rather than bleaching the tooth, so their role is maintenance, not a replacement.

One piece of standard advice does not belong on that list. The same review found that the so-called white diet, restricting what you eat during a course, is not supported by the evidence. Controlled trials show pigmented drinks do not measurably impair the result while the course is running. Diet governs how long a finished result holds, not whether the whitening works in the first place.

Expert Tip: keep a glass of water beside the coffee. Rinsing after a staining drink is the version of this advice people actually keep up.

How Long Does Whitening Teeth Take on the Day?

How long teeth whitening lasts and how long it takes are different questions, and patients often collapse the two. The second answer is short in both routes.

Whitening carried out at a dental practice is normally a single appointment of around one to two hours. The gel goes on with the gums shielded first. So how long does teeth whitening take? Less time than most people set aside for it. And how long does it take to bleach teeth? One to two hours as well.

A prescribed home course is the opposite shape. The chair time is a short appointment to check the trays fit and show you how to use them. The treatment itself is two to six weeks of wearing them at home. So how long does it take to whiten teeth? That depends entirely on which of the two routes you are given.

Helpful Tip: ask which system you are being offered before you book time off. One route is a single appointment, the other is a fortnight at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions below come up in consultations more often than anything else about whitening. Most are really about what happens after the result is achieved.

How long does tooth whitening last?
Around three years with dentist-supervised treatment and good aftercare, though it is never a fixed figure. Expect a slow drift rather than a sudden loss, with the first change usually noticeable around six months in.

Does whitening damage enamel?
Professionally supervised whitening does not damage enamel. Peroxide gels can temporarily increase surface roughness, but saliva reverses that. The stronger safety argument is about who supplies it. NHS guidance is explicit that whitening bought from beauty salons or online can harm teeth and gums.

Can you whiten crowns, veneers or fillings?
No. Whitening lightens natural tooth structure only, so crowns, veneers, implants and white fillings keep the shade they were made in. Whiten your natural teeth and existing restorations may end up looking darker by comparison. That is worth raising before you start, not after.

How often can you safely top up?
That is a question for the dentist who treated you: it depends on the system used and how your teeth responded. What you should not do is set the interval yourself from a shop-bought product. Nor should you start again because the shade looks less bright under a different light.

Will my teeth be sensitive, and how long does that last?
Sensitivity to cold or sweet things is the most common side effect, and it is temporary: peroxide reaches the pulp and settles again afterwards. Several professional systems use an anti-sensitivity gel to keep it minimal. If it lingers or is severe, tell the practice rather than pushing on.

Does whitening work on every kind of stain?
No, and this is worth knowing before you spend. It works best on the causes the NHS names: age, staining drinks such as coffee, tea and red wine, and smoking. Discolouration from other causes, such as a single tooth that darkened after an injury, can behave differently and needs assessing first.

Do whitening toothpastes keep the result going?
Up to a point. They remove surface stain through mild abrasives rather than bleaching the tooth, so they help hold a result rather than create one. Toothpastes containing low-concentration peroxide can shift the shade a little, but only after around twelve weeks of use three times a day.

How long after whitening should I wait before coffee or red wine?
Ask the practice that treated you, because it varies by system. What the evidence does not support is avoiding those drinks during the course to protect the result. The reason to be careful with them is the years afterwards, when they are the main thing putting the colour back.

What to Remember About Whitening Results

Around three years is the realistic figure for how long teeth whitening lasts under a dentist’s supervision. The fade starts quietly at about six months, not at the end. Almost everything that shortens it is surface staining you can influence. One popular piece of advice, cutting out coffee and wine during the course itself, turns out to have no evidence behind it.

The five things worth knowing:

  • Three years is the window, not the guarantee. NHS guidance puts it there for dentist-supervised whitening with good aftercare.
  • The drift starts at six months. A randomised trial measured it, and the result was still clearly better a year on.
  • The route changes the top-up, not the timescale. Home trays are easier to refresh because you keep them.
  • Hygiene visits do the quiet work. Removing surface film is the step most patients skip.
  • Restrict your diet after, not during. The white diet during a course is not supported by clinical evidence.
